This Ocean Dialogue aimed to highlight the significance of the UN High Seas BBNJ (Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction) Treaty that was agreed in 2023 for ocean health and the importance of its swift ratification by at least 60 nations so it can enter into force as soon as possible. The event outlined the 4 key pillars of the Treaty, namely area-based management tools, environmental impact assessments, capacity building and technology transfer, and the equitable access and benefit-sharing of marine genetic resources. It raised the urgency for widespread support for the Treaty, including from G20 countries, in promoting ratification and implementation.
The presentations and discussions during the webinar highlighted the scope for impact that the new Treaty could have on promoting greater ocean health and equity. It also underlined the importance of ensuring adequate resources are provided to support ratification and implementation efforts in developing countries.
