Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal data RISE UP collects, why we collect it, how we look after it, and the rights you have over it.
RISE UP is a global network of civil society and community-led organizations advocating for equitable, just and inclusive ocean governance. We collect very little personal data — mainly what you choose to give us when you subscribe to our newsletter, contact us, or apply to join the network.

We handle that data in line with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018, and the EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR) where it applies to you.

This policy covers this website and any personal data we hold about subscribers, enquirers and network members. It does not cover the independent websites of our member organizations, which have their own privacy policies.

Who we are

Who is responsible for your data

Data protection law calls the organization that decides how and why personal data is used the “data controller”. For personal data collected through this website, the data controller is the organization named opposite.

We are not required to appoint a statutory Data Protection Officer. Privacy questions and requests are handled by the RISE UP Secretariat.

What we collect

The data we collect, and why

Data protection law requires a valid lawful basis for every use of personal data. Below we set out each way we use personal data, what we collect, the lawful basis we rely on, and how long we keep it.

Providing your data is always voluntary. You can browse this website without giving us any personal data, but we cannot send you the newsletter or reply to an enquiry without it.

The Navigator newsletter

What we collect:
First name, last name and email address.
Why:
To send you The Navigator, our monthly newsletter on ocean policy and network news.
Lawful basis:
Consent (Article 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw consent at any time using the unsubscribe link in every email.
How long:
Until you unsubscribe, or after 24 months of no engagement, whichever comes first.

Contact and media enquiries

What we collect:
Your name, organization, email address, enquiry type and the content of your message.
Why:
To respond to your enquiry and keep a record of the correspondence.
Lawful basis:
Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)) — responding to people who choose to contact us.
How long:
24 months from our last correspondence with you.

Network membership applications

What we collect:
Organization name, website, region and country, your full name and position, email address, LinkedIn profile where given, and your organization’s mission statement.
Why:
To assess your application, administer membership and communicate with members.
Lawful basis:
Steps taken at your request before entering an agreement (Article 6(1)(b)), and our legitimate interests in running the network (Article 6(1)(f)).
How long:
For the duration of your membership and for 24 months afterwards.

Website analytics

What we collect:
Pages viewed, the referring website, country, and device and browser type. Our analytics provider derives a temporary daily identifier from your IP address and browser, but never stores your IP address, and that identifier cannot be used to recognize you on a later day.
Why:
To understand which pages are useful and improve the site. The data is aggregate only. We cannot identify you from it, we do not track you across websites, and we never use it for advertising.
Lawful basis:
Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)) in maintaining and improving our website. Because nothing is stored on or read from your device, no cookie consent is required.
How long:
Aggregate statistics are retained for as long as we run this website. No individual-level record of your visit is ever created.
Cookies

Cookies and similar technologies

A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser. This website does not set any cookies. We use no advertising cookies, no social media pixels, and no third-party analytics such as Google Analytics. Our visitor statistics are cookie-free, which is why you will not see a cookie consent banner here — there is nothing to consent to.

Videos on this site are not loaded until you choose to play them, so reading a page never contacts YouTube or Vimeo.
Your choices. Because nothing is stored on your device, there is nothing you need to switch off. If you would still rather not be counted in our anonymous visitor statistics, most browsers and privacy extensions can block analytics requests, and doing so will not affect your use of this site.

Playing a video. When you press play, the video is loaded from YouTube or Vimeo at that moment. Those services will then receive your IP address in order to stream it, and may store information on your device under their own privacy policies. If you would rather share nothing with them, simply do not press play.
What we store on your device
Nothing. Our analytics provider, Plausible, uses no cookies, no local storage and no browser cache, and creates no persistent identifier for you.
How visitors are counted: a temporary identifier is calculated from your IP address and browser using a secret that is destroyed and replaced every 24 hours. Your IP address itself is never stored.
If you log in: WordPress sets its own cookies to keep you signed in and to run the site securely. These are strictly necessary and apply only to people who hold an account with us.
Sharing

Who we share your data with

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal data, and we never share it with third parties for their own marketing. We do rely on a small number of trusted service providers who process personal data on our behalf, under contract and only on our instructions:
  • Plausible Insights OÜ (Estonia, EU) — provides our cookie-free website statistics. All data is hosted in the European Union.
  • Mailchimp (Intuit Inc., United States) — delivers The Navigator and stores subscriber names and email addresses.
  • YouTube (Google) and Vimeo — host our embedded videos. Nothing is sent to them unless you press play, at which point they receive your IP address in order to stream the video. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode, so YouTube stores nothing on your device unless you actually play a video.
  • Our website hosting provider — stores this website and any form submissions on secure servers.
  • Content delivery networks — some fonts and scripts are served by Adobe Fonts and unpkg.com, which receive your IP address in order to deliver those files. They set no cookies and do not track you across sites.
We may also disclose personal data where the law requires it, or to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
International transfers
Our website statistics stay within the European Union. Mailchimp is based in the United States, and if you choose to play a video, Google (YouTube) may also transfer data outside the UK and European Economic Area. Where personal data leaves the UK or EEA, we rely on the safeguards permitted by data protection law — the UK International Data Transfer Addendum and the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses, together with the EU–US and UK–US Data Privacy Framework where the recipient is certified.
You can ask us for more detail about these safeguards at privacy@riseupfortheocean.org.

Looking after your data

Security, other sites and changes

How we protect your data

We use appropriate technical and organizational measures to keep personal data secure, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), access controls, and limiting access to the people who need it. No transmission over the internet can be guaranteed completely secure, but we take these obligations seriously. Where a personal data breach is likely to result in a risk to your rights, we will notify the relevant supervisory authority and, where required, you.

Links to other websites

This site links to the websites of network members, partners and other organizations. This policy does not apply to them, and we are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any website you visit.

Children’s data

This website and our newsletter are intended for adults working in ocean policy, conservation and civil society. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The “last updated” date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised. Where a change materially affects how we use your personal data, we will tell subscribers by email.
Contact

Questions or complaints

If you have a question about this policy, or you would like to exercise any of the rights above, contact us at privacy@riseupfortheocean.org.
Right to complain
If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your personal data, you can complain to a data protection supervisory authority. In the UK this is the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113). If you are in the EU or EEA, you may complain to the supervisory authority where you live or work.
