Terms & Conditions

These terms explain the basis on which you may use the RISE UP website, and the limits of our responsibility for it.
By using this website you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use the site.

RISE UP is a global network of civil society and community-led organizations advocating for equitable, just and inclusive ocean governance. This website is published as a free public resource. It is not a commercial service, and nothing on it is offered for sale.

These terms cover your use of the website. Our Privacy Policy separately explains how we handle personal data — and where the two documents overlap, the Privacy Policy governs anything relating to personal data.
In these terms, “we” and “us” mean RISE UP, of 20 Northumberland Road, Bristol BS6 7BB, United Kingdom.

What you may and may not do

You may read, print and download material from this website for your own personal, non-commercial use, and for the non-commercial work of a civil society or community organization — provided you do not alter the material and you keep any copyright notice and credit visible.
You must not use this site for any unlawful purpose, or in any way that could damage it or interfere with anyone else’s use of it. In particular, you must not introduce viruses or other harmful code, attempt to gain unauthorized access to the site or its servers, or use the site to send material that is unlawful, threatening, defamatory, obscene or otherwise objectionable.

Intellectual property

Who owns what on this site

Unless we say otherwise, the material on this website — text, articles, photographs, illustrations, graphics, video, audio, data, logos and the site design — is owned by RISE UP or used with the permission of the rights holder. It is protected by copyright and other intellectual property rights under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 and equivalent international law.
Some material belongs to other people, including photographs supplied by our members, partners and image banks. Where a photograph carries a credit, the copyright belongs to the named photographer or organization rather than to RISE UP, and you will need their permission to reuse it.
Photographs on this site show a credit on the image itself wherever one has been supplied.
We are grateful to the photographers, member organizations and partners who have allowed us to use their work.
Your content

Material you send us

If you send us personal data — through a contact form, a membership application or by email — we handle it in accordance with our Privacy Policy. We treat it as confidential and we do not publish it.
If you send us material for publication — a photograph, case study, quote or article — you keep the copyright in it. You give us permission to use it for the purpose you sent it for, including on this website, in The Navigator and in our wider communications. That permission is non-exclusive, and you can ask us to stop using the material at any time by contacting us.
Please note
Please do not send us confidential or commercially sensitive information that you would not want us to act on. We cannot guarantee to keep unsolicited ideas or proposals confidential, and we may already be working on something similar.
Our responsibility

Accuracy, availability and liability

We publish this website in good faith and take care over its content, but it is provided for general information only.

Accuracy of information

The content of this site is general information. It is not legal, scientific, financial or professional advice, and you should not rely on it as such. We make no warranty that the information is complete, accurate or up to date, and we may change or correct it at any time without notice.

Availability of the site

We do not guarantee that this site will always be available or uninterrupted, or that it will be free of errors, viruses or other harmful components. We may suspend, withdraw or restrict all or part of the site at any time without notice.

Links to other websites

This site links to websites run by other organizations. We provide those links for convenience only. We do not control those sites, we do not endorse their content, and we are not responsible for them. Visiting them is at your own risk, and their own terms and privacy policies will apply.

Our liability to you

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or inability to use, this site — including any loss of profit, loss of data, or indirect or consequential loss. Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be limited or excluded.
Legal

Governing law and changes

These terms, and any dispute or claim arising out of or in connection with them or your use of this website, are governed by the law of England and Wales. You and we agree that the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction — except that if you are a consumer resident elsewhere, you keep the benefit of any mandatory protections of your local law and the right to bring proceedings in the courts of the country where you live.
We may update these terms from time to time. The date near the top of this page shows when they were last revised, so please check back occasionally. Continuing to use the site means you accept the version then in force.
