RISE UP began with the Blue Call to Action, launched by the Oceano Azul Foundation and Ocean Unite. Bringing together conservation organizations, foundations, and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC) groups, it established a shared vision for ocean recovery and stronger ocean governance.
RISE UP expanded its network and advocacy for ocean conservation. Following the 2020 launch of the Blue Call to Action with the UN Secretary-General, the network adapted during the pandemic through digital engagement and global ocean and climate initiatives.
RISE UP brought its global network together through key moments such as the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon. New structures, including the Small-Scale Fishers Cluster, strengthened collaboration as the network grew to more than 600 organizations.
RISE UP expanded to 650+ organizations, strengthening engagement across Africa, Asia and the Global South. Through community-led approaches, High Seas Treaty advocacy and collaboration with small-scale fishers, the network advanced more inclusive ocean governance.
RISE UP has grown to more than 760 organizations across 60+ countries, strengthening partnerships and collective action through initiatives such as the Ocean and Climate Cluster. The network continues to mobilize civil society around ocean recovery, climate resilience and global ocean governance.
RISE UP is steered by a small secretariat team, an Advisory Group drawn from member organizations across the network, and an Oversight Board. Get to know the people driving the campaign forward.
