Led by RISE UP's Khadija Stewart, the session uses a Caribbean lens to explore the importance of integrated ocean management for ecosystem preservation, cultural wellbeing, economic stability and climate resilience.
Guest speakers from across science, policy, law and economy emphasize the need for robust scientific data and indigenous knowledge to inform policy decisions, in order to sustain the social, economic and ecological benefits that the ocean provides. The discussion underscores the urgency of a coordinated, regional stance with regards to a precautionary moratorium on deep-sea mining, and closes with a call to action for the upcoming International Seabed Authority, taking place in Jamaica in March 2026, for Caribbean leadership to step forward as stewards of the deep sea.
