As global attention turns to Madagascar for the Eleventh Conference of Parties (COP11) of the Nairobi Convention, RISE UP is amplifying the urgent call from artisanal fishing communities across Africa and the Pacific. From August 20-22, 2024, COP11 will convene against the backdrop of major international policy developments such as the High Seas Treaty and the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework.
In this crucial moment for ocean governance, the Locally Managed Marine Area (LMMA) network that supports networks in Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Pohnpei, Fiji and the Solomon Islands, and engages with more than 15 other countries in the Indo Pacific. and the African Confederation of Artisanal Fisheries Organizations (CAOPA) that unite artisanal fisheries professionals from 27 African countries and represents tens of thousands of small-scale fishers, have presented their recommendations to safeguard the Western Indian Ocean’s coastal and marine ecosystems. These groups, representing some of the most affected communities, are urging COP11 member nations to adopt a precautionary approach, especially with respect to the emerging threats of deep-sea mining.
