The most important climate summit for coastal communities

COP 30 in Belém, Brazil represents a critical inflection point in the global response to climate change — and a pivotal moment for ocean and coastal communities. Hosted in the Amazon region, it carries the spirit of the communities most exposed to climate breakdown: small island states, coastal fishing villages, and Indigenous peoples whose lives are shaped by the sea.
For RISE UP, COP 30 is a priority moment. The ocean-climate nexus — long under-represented in UNFCCC processes — must be central to the Belém outcomes. Ambition must be matched by justice: loss and damage finance, meaningful coastal community participation, and ocean-based climate solutions that serve the people who need them most.

How RISE UP will mobilize at COP 30

RISE UP's COP 30 engagement is built around three pillars — each designed to maximize civil society impact on outcomes that affect ocean and coastal communities.

Network Coordination

Coordinating RISE UP member participation, facilitating pre-COP briefings, and ensuring that organizations attending Belém are aligned on priority asks and advocacy strategies. Strength in numbers, guided by strategy.

Side Events & Advocacy

Hosting and co-hosting COP side events focused on the ocean-climate nexus, small-scale fisheries, and loss and damage for ocean-dependent communities. Putting frontline community voices at the heart of the conversation.

Policy Influence

Engaging with negotiators to push for ocean-friendly NDC language, adequate loss and damage finance for coastal nations, and inclusion of ocean-based solutions in the global stocktake — tracked, followed up, and reported back to the network.
